World Oceans Day 2021

World Oceans Day 2021

As Royal Navy Submariners we feel a deeper connection (pun intended) to the ocean that goes beyond the job. We rely on the ocean to survive, hunt and hide... similar to the wonderful creatures we share the ocean with.

After completing the Atlantic crossing in 2020, we were privileged to be given a voice to help others delivering over 70 talks/webinars over the past year to a broad range of organisations within Defence , industry, corporate and education. We spoke about a range of themes and learnings on isolation, mental health, resilience, wellbeing, performance and adventure.

A unique and powerful moment on our road show came from a talk to a group of scouts where a 12 year year old asked us about how much plastic waste we saw on the Atlantic and what were we doing with our own waste.

There's powerful message here about accountability, and that legacy we we all so often speak of. We each have a responsibility as leaders, influencers, government and industry to "leave the Jersey in a better place" (James Kerr's 15 lessons in leadership - a decent read).

HMS Oardacious is proud to live on, grow and adapt. We are embracing smarter ways and a more sustainable approach in the hope of leading by example and inspiring others to follow suit. We will embrace initiatives and campaigns to do our bit to leave the jersey in a better place.

A fantastic campaign is World Oceans Day (8th June every year).

World Oceans Day was founded in Canada in 1992 with a focal theme every year. Over 140 countries take part in this fantastic campaign that connects us and unites us (as the oceans do), all over the world; by working together we will protect and restore our shared ocean.

The 2021 Conservation Action Focus is protecting at least 30% of our blue planet for a healthy ocean and climate. Just like national parks help protect animals and habitats on land, marine protected areas help safeguard areas of the ocean and marine animals. HMS Oardacious is supporting the movement to protect 30% of our ocean by 2030. Will you join us?
